Life Story:

Hilma Josal was born in Hoquiam, Washington in 1983 to April and Stan Yantis. Hilma grew up walking on barnacle beaches barefoot and digging her lunch. Her mom helped her draw her first “kicking man” before age two. She studied music, art, and education at the University of Washington from 2001-2007. Thanks to the Husky Marching Band, Hilma got to travel the world playing trumpet and met her husband, Ryan. After college, Hilma got to teach many awesome young people music for eleven years. In 2018, Hilma retired early due to burn-out and became a full-time artist so that she would be a better mom for her two daughters: Ayla and Lana. Hilma lives in Monroe, Washington and is a member of two galleries in WA and OR.

Art Education:

Hilma studied art with: Grandma Sonia Preedy (1994-2006 Annual China Painting Lessons), Ken Rose (North Mason 2001 Art 101 4.0), Shane Walsh (UW 2006 Art 101 4.0), Zhi Lin (UW 2007 Figure Drawing 4.0) and Jamie Bollenbach (Seattle 2017 Oil Painting private lessons).
