ABOUT HILMA JOSAL

Hilma has been painting full-time since 2018. She gets her energy from music and being around people. You might see her painting upside down and letting children paint on her canvas.

She has shown work at: NWPAS 2017, ELS Medieval Fair 2017, Shelton Rotating Art Gallery 2018, Con of Thrones in Texas 2018, Cannon Beach Plein Air Festival 2018, Snohomish Art Gallery 2018, Equine Art 2018, Arts of the Terrace 2018, Seattle Art Battle 2019, Equine Art 2019, Con of Thrones in Tennessee 2019, and started the first Art Walk Snohomish 2019.

Hilma won the Campbell Award for Oil Honorable Mention in 2018 at the Equine Art Festival held by the Washington Thoroughbred Foundation.

Van Camp Cellars has a red wine with Hilma’s green ship painting called, All Hands on Deck.

2021 Hilma illustrated the children’s book, Hjilmer and The Fire Witch by Mark Blair, featured in The Everett Herald.

Life Story:

Hilma Josal was born in Hoquiam, Washington in 1983 to April and Stan Yantis. Hilma grew up walking on barnacle beaches barefoot and digging clams. Her mom helped her draw her first “kicking man” before age two. She studied music, art, and education at the University of Washington from 2001-2007. Thanks to the Husky Marching Band, Hilma got to travel the world playing trumpet and met her husband, Ryan. After college, Hilma got to teach many awesome young people choir for eleven years. In 2018, Hilma retired early and became a full-time artist. Hilma lives in Monroe, Washington and is a member of the Arts of Snohomish Gallery.

Hilma studied art with: Ken Rose (North Mason 2001 Art 101 4.0), Shane Walsh (UW 2006 Art 101 4.0), Zhi Lin (UW 2007 Figure Drawing 4.0) and Jamie Bollenbach (Seattle 2017 Oil Painting private lessons).
